Bidirectional trigger diode is also known as two-terminal AC device (DIAC). In addition to triggering triacs, bidirectional trigger diodes are also commonly used in overvoltage protection, timing, and phase shifting circuits. When the transient voltage exceeds DIAC and Ubo, DIAC quickly conducts turn on and trigger the triac to also turn on, protecting the load behind from overvoltage damage.Functioning as a trigger diode with a fixed voltagereference,  the  DB3/DB4  series  can  be  used  inconjunction with triacs for simplified gate controlcircuits or as a starting element in fluorenscentlamp ballasts.
