Ceramic gas discharge tube is the most widely used switching device in lightning protection equipment. It is connected in series in the line and can be used in AC and DC power supply and lightning protection of various signal circuits. It can be used to discharge lightning current into the ground. . It is formed by encapsulating a pair of discharge gaps in a ceramic tube filled with a discharge medium (inert gas). According to the number of electrodes, there are two types of diode discharge tubes and triode discharge tubes (equivalent to two diode discharge tubes connected in series). Its shape is cylindrical, and there are two types of structures with and without leads (some also have a protection card for short circuit when overheated)
The basic principle of ceramic gas discharge tube is gas discharge. The pulse breakdown voltage of the commonly used discharge tube ranges from several hundred volts to more than one thousand volts. The discharge tube was originally in an open circuit state, with a large resistance and a small capacitance. Once the pulse overvoltage reaches the pulse breakdown voltage of the discharge tube, and the electric field strength between the electrodes exceeds the breakdown strength of the gas, a gap discharge will be caused, the gas in the tube will be ionized, and the discharge tube will be turned on, changing from the original open circuit state to an approximate short circuit. At this time, the on-resistance of the discharge tube is very small, and the surge current can be discharged to the ground through a large surge current, so that other devices and circuits connected with the discharge tube can be prevented from being damaged by the surge impact.
The ceramic gas discharge tube is used in the common mode circuit of the power supply lightning arrester to leak the lightning current to the ground, and it can also be used in series with the varistor in the differential mode circuit to block its leakage current. It is often used in the first stage to discharge surge current in the signal lightning arrester. Due to its slow response speed, the second stage is also used for voltage limiting protection. The ceramic gas discharge tube is a switching component, and the voltage at both ends is very low when it is turned on, so it cannot be directly used in an active circuit for differential mode protection. When it must be used, the current-limiting components should be connected in series to prevent damage or even fire caused by excessive current during conduction; it can return to the open-circuit state after the surge.
